Seven Facts About the Midnight Magic Series

  1. Black cats are considered lucky or unlucky depending on where you live. In England, most people believe they’re a sign of good fortune if one crosses your path.
  2. When I was little my mum gave me an audiobook of Gobbolino the Witch’s Cat by Ursula Moray Williams. I think this is why I’ve always associated black cats as being magical.
  3. I’ve now owned (or been owned by!) three black cats: Pepper, Marmite and Sorsha, and one black and white cat called Widdershins.
  4. Black cats are the most overlooked in animal shelters and cat rescue centres. One reason for this is that people often want ‘prettier’ or more unusual colours and markings. So if you’re considering rehoming a cat, why not get a black one?
  5. Although each book is around 2500 words (roughly the length of one chapter of my middle grade books) they take around 2-3 months to write due to the trickiness of rhyming.
  6. I think the reason I love black cats so much is that I’ve always secretly wanted to be a witch. Having them around the house is probably the closest I’ll come to really being one!
  7. On the last couple of pages of Witch Trap, Midnight and Trixie are shown in a book shop. If you look closely you can see that the illustrator, Elissa, has drawn tiny copies of my other books. Trixie is even reading one!
